Harry Chapin

For Harry... and all his friends, known and unknown

Harry Chapin was a songwriter
who inspired me to write
he filled so many empty spaces
and held me many a lonely night
he gave me hope and some thing more
a good kick in my (you know where)
but most of all he showed me how
one man could really care

Harry Chapin was a storyteller
who inspired me to think
he held my heart and eased my mind
better than any drug or drink
he embraced my emotions when I
was scared to get too deep
and his melodies were lullabies
when I needed to sleep

Harry Chapin was an everyman
who inspired me to feel
without magic or miracles
for Harry, he was real
all saviors, prophets, or legends
could not touch me like he could
with candor he just melted me
because he knew he could
(because he knew it would)

...and oh how much I miss him...
...and oh I wish he were here...
...I'd hug him and I'd kiss him...
...and touch him with my tear...
...and oh when my time comes to go...
...I hope to find him there...
...for in my life so few have been...
...so gentle with my fears...
...the greatest gift he gave to me...
...was to make me aware...
...it's so easy to care...
...it's so easy to share...
...it's so easy... to be here...

...

Harry Chapin was a friend of mine
though I never shook his hand
and this might sound strange to some
but I know Harry would understand
when I felt lost and so alone
when life was too real to be planned
the thread that held me together
was knowing he'd understand
knowing Harry would understand...
